It was really a humble beginning. Living in South Shore neighbourhood of Chicago on Euclid Avenue, enrolled at Bryn Mawr Elementary School, She, Michelle La Vaughn Robinson, was different from the rest.
We know the innocence of a child. After being asked to sit back down for not able to read one of the word from the manila cards that her teacher would show up, determined, the very next day she would ask for a do-over, a sign of courage and to advocate for what is right.
“I’m not sure. She said, giving me a Perfunctory, Patronizing Smile, “that you’re Princeton material”.
Not only she would make it to the Princeton, she would go on to study law at Harvard and would work at Sidley & Austin, a law firm, in the marketing and intellectual practice group.
It was here at Sidley & Austin, where she would meet Barack Obama, who would intern as summer associate while studying at the Harvard Law school.
Barack was serious without being self-serious.He was breezy in his manner but powerful in his mind. It was a strange, stirring combination.
Life afterwards would not be the same, after being married to Barack Obama on October 1992, it would Become from Me to US, any decision now has to be taken together and its repercussion to be equally shared.
Motherhood Became my Motivator. It dictated my movements, my decisions, the rhythm of every day. It took no time, no thought at all, for me to be fully consumed by my new role as mother.
It was an experience, she would share, when Malia Ann Obama, her first daughter, was born(1998), later on with Natasha Marian Obama(2001).
“Do we settle for the world as it is, or do we work for the world as it should be?
It was the motivation to change the world for better future, as she says, was the reason behind Barack Obama’s decision to run for the presidential election(Feb 10, 2007).
On November 4, 2008, the election would take place and Barack Obama would become the 44th president of America.
With power comes responsibility. Now at the White House every step , every action would be closely watched.
And as a First Lady, she would take various initiative to reduce childhood obesity(Let’s Move), encouraging girls to learn,or taking care of the family members of military, and it would continue even after Barack Obama was elected for the the second term, and on to Becoming MORE.
So what does Becoming mean to me ?
It isn’t about arriving somewhere or acheiving a certain aim. I see it as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.
Personally, the book is very well written, in a simple language, engrossing, but i feel somewhere down the line she has overshadowed her achievement’s, inspite of BECOMING MORE. So , i think, the often cited adage holds true here: “Behind every successful men there is a women”.
