LEAN IN: WOMEN , WORK, AND THE WILL TO LEAD

The issue of ‘gender inequality’ has become more central than the past.It means two things- either the issue has been neglected or we as a society are more aware of it, but certainly ‘denial’ is not the answer.

In her book, Lean In, the author explains beautifully both from her personal experience and of others, the various stereotypes that surround women and how it’s not always the ‘external barrier’ but also the ‘internal’ that holds them back and to be ambitious.

What would you do if you weren’t afraid? or if you do not ‘feel like fraud’, the author beleives most of time women could not raise their voice just because they are afraid to act or due to lack of confindence, self- doubt, that they feel like ‘imposter’ undermining their achievements.

The selection of women to various profession is not always merit based, and how just by changing the name and gender of the same person affects perception was startling to read.

Organizational hierarchy, the author argues, has become more of a ‘jungle gym’ , you don’t have to climb a ladder or work for certain period of time to reach the top.

The role of mentor is certainly important but that should be mutually beneficial , how each could benefit from the other.

Communication works best when we combine appropriateness with authencity. For anyone who aspire to be at the top should skill themselves to seek and speak truth without hurting the feeling of others.

The most common problem womens face is how to balance their work and life , and in order to prepare for motherhood most of them relinquish their top postions, the author emphasizes, just the fear of being not the same or they will be less productive after their parenthood, most of the women give up instead of staying through, and as various research have shown the future is not always the same and most women who have withstood have done well.

The support from men, as a husband, brother or at organisation is very crucial for achieving equality.

HAVING IT ALL. It is impossible for a women or anyone to do everything perfectly. “Done is better than perfect” . Accordingly, aspiration is good as long as the goals or sight set forth is achievable and realistic.

The more women realize their strength and weaknesses and try to share or talk about it, the author feels, we can be more equitable as a society.

In the end,  in a cautious tone, the author emphasizes that it’s not always “Us versus them” but also “Us versus Us” that can stop the progress, women  should come together, help themselves and LEAN IN.

Personally, i feel,  the book is highly credible,  explaining the issues clearly and at the same time not being boastful for championing the cause of women.
